Danke schön
Roses are red. Violets are blue. But you don’t need to know that. I’m just saying “thank you.”
👋, I’m Kimberly. I’ve been creating obsession-worthy brands for the past fifteen years. And now, I’m giving away my secrets every week in this newsletter.
Personally and professionally, it’s been a year!
Thank you to all of my subscribers at The Branding Newsletter and my clients at Brands That Get You for making 2022 a time of inspiration, celebration, and reinvention. You made me want to twist and shout!
At the start of last year, I made a commitment for this newsletter and my agency to promote Healthier Mental Models for a Better World.
This commitment was inspired by my work in grad school, where I wrote my thesis on the negative mental effects of gender stereotypes in advertising.
Today, Brands That Get You devotes 100% of its resources to working with founders who are 100% committed to using their brands’ impact for good — developing healthy mental models for a better world.
And here in The Branding Newsletter, I highlight people and brands that are breaking the stereotypical mold in similarly positive ways.
In 2022, Brands That Get You had the honor of working with:
A fiercely transformative skincare brand that formulates with brown skin first-in-mind and wants to put an end to harmful skin bleaching
A game-changing consumer-to-consumer marketplace that lets people rent anything, anywhere, from anyone
A genuinely heartfelt restaurant group working tirelessly to revitalize downtown San Francisco back to its pre-pandemic peak
An insanely innovative bio-backed beauty brand using DNA sequencing to resurrect the scents of extinct flowers
A breakthrough home cleaning brand that makes products that are just as effective as bleach — and safe enough to brush your teeth with
A world-widening shoe brand that's on a mission to start a conversation with every step
Multiple new in-house brands for one of the US's largest retailers will bring highest-performance at more approachable price points
A single-batch mezcal brand that highlights the unique street art of Oaxaca and honors the traditional way of producing mezcal's rare and fleeting flavors
A groundbreaking personal brand for a superpowered former beauty and fashion executive who is inviting leading BIPOC and women experts and voices to open up the well-being conversation
An incredibly inclusive two-month campaign for the first foundation launch by one of the leading makeup brands in Sephora
To close out the year, I’ve made a donation to The Jed Foundation on behalf of all of my newsletter subscribers and branding clients.
The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit that protects the emotional health of teens and young adults.
Their national "Seize the Awkward" campaign has done an amazing job of encouraging young people to have important (but sometimes awkward!) conversations with each other about their mental health, particularly with friends who might be struggling with mental health issues.
Thank you for being on this journey with me!
2022 wouldn’t have been the same without you.
Cheers to the New Year!
Kimberly
